The New eBay Fees Announced Yesterday - Comments Wanted

Melissa & Doug Play Money SetI have tried to express my feelings about the new eBay changes announced yesterday in a nice, friendly blog post several times. Many edits later I am still sitting here looking at a blank page. I have played with the numbers, read the announcement....& scratched my head. The lowest fees ever??? Hardly. Most sellers with a store are going to be paying a HUGE increase. Store items will go from $0.03 to $0.20 each. There are a lot of other changes, too. I am still looking to see what is the best option for me. Please be sure to read about the changes so you aren't hit with a big bill March 30.  What do you think about the changes? Will they change the way you sell?

Looking for another site. Going to concentrate on Bonanzle and Etsy for now. Will see how the new fees work out, but will list on a budget and I will make sure I stay well below the number of listings I have now.

Ebay is going to continue raising prices until they are going to lose all of their sellers. Why bother if you cannot make enough to make it worth your time.

When I sent you that message about this, I hadn't really sat down and crunched the numbers. I mean, you hear a headline like "lowest fees ever," and of course it sounds good right? What did I see at first? Lower insertion fees. Well that "sounds" good.

Now, I don't have a store, list the same items each week, and list most of my items auction style, starting under $10 (a few under $1, which will be nice to benefit from the free under $1 insertion fees). But after looking closer at the numbers, I wasn't so sure the "lower insertion fees" was going to outweigh the RISE in final value fee (ends under $25 - formerly 8.75%, over $25, 8.75% of the first $25 [2.19] + 3.5% of the remaining amount over $25), now a FLAT 9%.

After assessing my completed listings, here's how I will be affected:
Items that end under $25, I will be paying slightly less, but items that go over $25, I will actually be paying more. Most of the time, my items end under $25 (3 of out my last 51 listings were over $25).

I don't have a store, but I glanced at the changes for stores and couldn't even wrap my head around it. It seems like there are going to be some big changes for sellers with stores.

I found this page to be helpful, it's a "Fee illustrator" from eBay, where you can input the amount of items you sell, average selling price, etc., and they will compare costs for having a store vs. not having a store and recommend which will work best for you when the new fees take effect.

Based on my findings, this will generally not change the way I sell on eBay, besides paying slightly less or slightly more on fees. Since I don't have a store, I will not be affected enough to leave eBay or anything drastic like that. But I can't even imagine the change for people with stores!

You can read the following link to read some comments on the eBay board. Actual numbers people have plugged into the number of auctions the sell to see exactly how much more they will pay. In some cases I saw HUNDREDS more in fees. http://forums.ebay.com/thread.jspa?rw=true&anticache=1264701842664&start=120&threadID=510185085&anticache=1264709439703

I also crunched numbers and there is no way my little ebay book store can stay afloat with those prices...I am better off to go back to listing auction style..most of my books can start out under a dollar so I can take advantage of that ....it is kind of sad it was a nice way to make a little extra fun money...but since it almost costs me now....I have to get out before I am under all the way!

Thanks for this post. I sometimes sell on ebay mostly because its so well known and I've been buying and selling on and off for years.

I would love to find another site because I do feel like they've gotten too big. I sell a few supplies on Etsy, but love Ebay for the wider audience.

Are there any better auction sites?
